The finished track bristles with exuberant energy from start to finish and became a Top 30 hit on the pop chart in 1972. Grand Funk Railroad plays "Rock and Roll Soul" for all it's worth on its rousing recording of the song, starting with a funky groove that kicks into a driving up-tempo rock feel that doesn't quit as the band throws in every scorching organ lick, drum fill, and power chord it can think of. The lyrics are classic party-song stuff, starting off with an invitation to Grand Funk Railroad's vision of a rock & roll party ("We're havin' a party, yeah, yeah/Everybody's invited/The new generation along with the old") and quickly moving into a call to order for its fans: "Tell everybody you know, you got some rock & roll soul." The music backs this up with a punchy sense of swing, leaping from note to note in a syncopated style in both its verses and choruses.
